Continuing Certification

The ABNM Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Program been updated to reflect the changes required by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) new “Standards for Continuing Certification (CC)”, effective January 1, 2024.

Diplomates with time-limited certification who want to recertify must meet the following requirements each calendar year:

What I Need to Do

The ABNM CC program provides documentation that a nuclear medicine physician maintains the necessary competencies to provide quality patient care in nuclear medicine throughout his/her career. This outline is a quick reference of “What I Need to Do” as an ABNM Diplomate.

Diplomates must attest or provide documentation every calendar year that they are meeting the requirements. Attestation and documentation can be completed by updating your dashboard.

Professional Standing

Update Professional Standing, including NRC authorized user status, medical licensure, and practice profile. The ABNM requires diplomates to have an unrestricted medical license in all jurisdictions where a diplomate is licensed.

Professional Development Activities

Attest to a minimum 2-year average of 25 AMA category 1 credits per year

Improving Health and Health Care

Attest to participating in at least 1 qualifying activity related to Improving Health and Health Care. Diplomates who have no clinical responsibilities during the year are not required to participate in an activity

Assessment

Participate in CertLink® and meet the passing requirements (alternatively, diplomates may opt to take the CC exam every 5 years)

Beginning in 2025, diplomates meeting all the CC requirements whose certification expires on December 31, 2025, or later will receive a new certificate that expires 5 years after the expiration date of their current certificate.

Diplomates’ certification history and current certification status will be shown on the public website maintained by the ABMS, “Certification Matters”. Diplomates may not be more than 2 calendar years behind (i.e. the current and previous calendar year) in meeting CC requirements for their status to show as Actively Maintaining Certification. Diplomates must meet the passing standards for CertLink or the CC exam every 5 years for their status to also show as Certified.

Professional Development (PDA) Activities

Attest to a minimum 2-year average of 25 AMA category 1 credits per year of continuing professional development (CPD) activities that maintain, update, develop and enhance knowledge, skills, and attitudes in response to the needs of patients.

Diplomates must maintain documentation of meeting the requirements which they may be required to submit prior to the start of a new recertification period.

  • Distance or online learning
  • Attending conferences
  • Research
  • Writing articles or papers
  • Planning or running a course
  • Additional formal education

Improving Health and Health Care

Qualifying Activities ¹ ²

  1. Member, clinical quality and/or safety committee
  2. Participation in a peer-review process or OPPE
  3. Participation in a root cause analysis team
  4. Publication of an article related to QI, or safety, or improvement in clinical care
  5. Invited presentation at a national meeting regarding QI or safety
  6. Regular (10/year) participation in clinical conferences (e.g. tumor boards)
  7. Creation, management, or participation in a quality or safety program (e.g. daily huddle)
  8. Local or national leadership role in a national/international QI program (e.g. Image Wisely)
  9. Completion of a peer survey on quality or patient safety
  10. Completion of a patient encounter of care survey
  11. Participation in applying for or maintaining accreditation (e.g. ACR, IAC)
  12. Participation in passing a federal or state radiation safety inspection without violations
  13. Participation in a phantom simulator program (e.g. SNMMI imaging proficiency phantom exercise)
  14. Being a program director for an ACGME-accredited residency or fellowship program
  15. Academic promotion
  16. Participation in an approved registry (e.g. NOPR)
  17. Any activity related to improvement of Health or Health Care, approved by the ABNM

Regaining Certification

A diplomate whose certificate has expired may recertify if they continue to meet CC requirements during the year(s) they are not certified, and meet the passing requirement for CertLink, or pass the CC exam. Diplomates who do not recertify within 5 years of the expiration date of their last certificate must pass the initial certification (CE) exam.
